The root barrier to radial O2 loss (ROL) is a trait enabling waterlogging tolerance of plants. ROL restricts diffusion the anoxic soil so that retained inside tissues. We hypothesised can also restrict other gases (H2 and water vapour) in rice roots with ROL. used H2 microsensors measure permeability roots, gravimetric measurements assess influence on (RWL). greatly restricted as well H2. At 60 kPa pO2, we found no across barrier, for reduced by 73%. Similarly, RWL was 93% barrier. Our study showed not only completely blocks under steep concentration gradients but diffusive vapour. strong correlation between presents case which simple be predict screening studies focus tolerance.
